Every production is built on the backbone of the pipeline. While a functional and flexible pipeline can’t assure a successful project, a weak pipeline can guarantee its demise. A solid pipeline produces a superior product in less time and with happier artists who can remain creative throughout the grueling production schedule. So, how exactly do you do this? Renee Dunlop, author of Production Pipeline Fundamentals, brings you her top 5 tips

1.) Don’t design your pipeline in the abstract – base it around the needs of the project and the team. Technology is the easy bit. Understanding the user; that’s the hard bit. That is where your efforts should be focused.

2.) Expect everything to change unexpectedly.

3.) Don’t settle for the simplest method of serializing data. File formats deserve as much thought as any other part of the pipeline (if not more). Consider how data should be laid out to minimize merge problems of exclusive file locks.

4.) However good your intentions are at the start of a project, when it comes to crunching for a demo or final, hacks happen. Remember when designing a pipeline, they are sometimes necessary even if not desirable.

5.) Always talk to your customers! What your customer wants and what they need are not always the same thing. If your customer is from your company you can save a lot of money by giving them what they need. If they are from another company you can make more money by giving them what they ask for.
